Cycling
The Greenway Voghera–Varzi is a mixed-use paved trail on a dedicated route, perfect for all types of cyclists to explore Oltrepò Pavese by bike. Thanks to its gentle gradients and overall safety, it offers a pleasant ride, with clear horizontal and vertical signage throughout the route. The trail begins near the Voghera train station.
To explore the area by bike, you can arrive directly by train with your bicycle or park your car at the large city autoport, which also features a bike station.
The Plains Between the Staffora River and the Po
Those who wish to discover the flatlands can head north along quiet country roads toward Cervesina, Pancarana, and Bastida Pancarana, eventually reaching the Po River bridge. Continuing a few more kilometers, you arrive in Pavia, where you can join the cycling path along the Naviglio Pavese canal all the way to Milan.
Along this route, you can also detour into the Vernavola Park and ride the loop trail known as the Via Verde della Battaglia.
At the Po River, you’ll also find access to VenTo, a cycle route of over 700 km running mostly along the riverbanks, connecting Turin to Venice.
Riding Through the Hills of Oltrepò
For those who love challenging climbs, the Greenway can serve as a launching point for various routes.
At Godiasco, cyclists can follow the Ardivestra Valley toward Montesegale and Fortunago, then descend through the Coppa Valley via Montebello della Battaglia, or continue climbing to the Passo del Carmine (600 m a.s.l.).
Near Casa Cucchi, it’s possible to ascend to the village of Cecima and then ride a scenic loop to Cà del Monte (700 m a.s.l.).
From Ponte Nizza, close to the station, you can follow the Val di Nizza road up to Sant’Albano (600 m a.s.l.), then choose to detour to Poggio Ferrato and Oramala Castle before descending to Varzi, or continue on to Valverde, Zavattarello, and Val Tidone, all the way to Romagnese and Passo del Penice (1149 m a.s.l.).
Once in Varzi, you can continue exploring the upper Oltrepò region:
- Ride to Passo del Brallo (951 m a.s.l.) and descend into the Val Trebbia
