Greenway: Journey to the Heart of Oltrepò
The Voghera-Varzi Greenway walking and cycling route winds through the Staffora Valley, following the old path of the electric railway that once connected the two towns at the valley’s foot and head. This green route climbs through the Apennines and is the result of a long-term regeneration project that involved many stakeholders in an effort to promote slow and sustainable mobility.
The Greenway project began with the conversion of the old railway line into a trail between Voghera and Salice Terme, then extended to include the final 19 km stretch between the spa town and Varzi.
The entire trail spans 33 km — almost entirely off-road — and winds through fields, vineyards, small woods, and historic villages. It invites nature lovers, outdoor sports enthusiasts, and families to discover a fascinating area nestled between Lombardy and Piedmont, plains and mountains, medieval heritage and rich local flavors.
The Greenway blends tradition and innovation. Alongside classic cycle path infrastructure — such as rest areas with benches, recycling bins, bike racks, informational panels, water fountains, picnic tables, and wooden safety railings — the route also features charging stations for e-bikes.
This website and www.visitpavia.com, the official tourism portal for the Province of Pavia, provide a wealth of information and the full GPX track to help you explore the Greenway and its surroundings.
