The Uncinettine Bicycle
Threads that weave together and distances that shrink
Those who regularly walk or cycle along the Greenway Voghera-Varzi will find a pleasant surprise in the stretch through Codevilla: the Uncinettine Bicycle, 2025 edition, is back. More colorful than ever, it has once again become a local landmark—and a perfect selfie spot.
The bike, covered in dozens of concentric crocheted squares, is located near the water station and is part of the small open-air “museum” that brightens this stretch of the trail. Nearby, the Tree of Life and the Bee House help create a cheerful, welcoming atmosphere, further enhanced by public lighting.
But the true strength of this project goes beyond aesthetics. Behind every stitch are stories, connections, and community. The Uncinettine crochet group was born in January 2020 as a simple initiative by the local library—a way to offer a social space for the women of the village. Five years later, the group is more active than ever. It was even mentioned during the latest town council meeting on July 21st as a successful example of grassroots engagement that continues to foster community spirit.
Today, the Uncinettine count around twenty members—mothers, daughters, and granddaughters. They stay in touch daily via WhatsApp, sharing tips, photos of their work, and ideas for future creations. Their creativity knows no bounds, and the Greenway has become the perfect canvas to showcase it.
One stitch at a time, crochet has done much more than decorate a bicycle: it has connected generations, closed gaps, and built relationships.
So once again this year, whether you’re walking or cycling between Voghera and Varzi, it will be hard not to notice—and maybe snap a photo of—this vibrant burst of color, imagination, and community spirit.
